About Pittari-Sensei
1.Background
Big institutions have long dominated the language learning market in Japan, causing dissatisfaction from both students and teachers in different aspects. Japanese students have long complained about the high cost of language learning and the fact that high costs does not always mean better quality. On the other hand, English teachers and other language teachers working for big schools are not recieving their fair share of this profit, while at the same time being limited to teach based on a predefined method or a certain non-flexible schedule.
2.Pittari-Sensei Service
Pittari-Sensei is dedicated to improve the process of English learning (and other languages) in Japan to the benefit of both English teachers and Japanese students. We believe that more friendly, man-to-man English teaching in a casual place like the student's home or a coffeeshop, can prove effective in the sense that it increases the motivation in the student and teacher and reduces the unnecessary stress. Our service is not limited to English, rather French, Spanish, German, Italian, Chinese, Korean and many other language teachers are welcome to join us!

Our service is intended to leave as much freedom for language teachers to implement original methods of teaching, fix classes according to their own schedule and location preferences, and finally charge the student as much as they consider appropriate!
English Teachers and other language teachers can register and become a member 100% free of charge. During the registration process we collect information from the teachers which will be published in their online profile on Pittari-Sensei. These information include your personal information, the language you would like to teach and your lesson fees, your free schedule and the names of the stations where you can have classes. To view a random profile of one of our teachers please click here.
We advertise regularly for our members so that all of our teachers can recieve students. Furthermore, we assist teachers to advertise for their own by providing free tools such as an automatic PDF profile of their submitted information, which they can post to notice boards and attract students directly. Also, we are planning to have a number of parties throughout the year for the teachers and students to hang out more and get to know eachother better.
3.Our Goals
Although pittari-sensei is a very young website, we see a very promising prospect for it judging from teacher and student feedbacks as well as our own progress statistics. We are working hard everyday to make Pittari-Sensei the biggest and most vibrant teacher-student matching hub in Japan, where every student can find a language teacher without the need for expensive intermidiary institutions. This will significantly reduce the necessary costs and restore control over the course of the class back to teachers and students.
Towards achieving this goal, we highly appriciate your comments and suggestions regarding our service and try our best to reflect them. You can send us your comments by using our contact form.
Also, please help us extend the reach of Pittari-Sensei by telling your fellow teachers about our site. We have installed a convenient service to tell your friends about us.
Message to Teachers
Thank you very much for your interest in Pittari-Sensei. Our team is working hard to make sure every teacher's profile will be advertized properly and all of our active teachers will recieve students. In return for this free service we kindly ask our teachers to be active on the website and update their profiles regularly. Teachers with new or updated profiles get more exposure in the search results and have a much higher chance of being selected by a student.
Furthermore, we kindly ask all of our registered teachers to use this site only for the purpose of language teaching and cultural exchange. We strictly object using this service for other secondary goals unrelated to language learning. For further information please make sure to read and agree to our terms of use.
After you are intriduced to a student, Pittari-Sensei will not monitor the course of your lessons. Therefore, in addition to the "rules", we have a complementary set of manners which all registered teachers are strongly urged to preserve. We kindly ask all registered teachers for the following:
  • Negotiate all terms of the language lesson in advance:
The first session of the class is a good opportunity to negotiate the exact price, schedule and location of your class. Please make sure to talk about your schedule and explain whatever limitations you might have regarding the date and time of the lesson (i.e. if you sometimes have to cancel classes on short notice etc.). Also please make sure to determine who is responsible for extra expenses such as transportation fee or meals (in case you teach in a restaurant). You can sometimes write some of your clear conditions in your profile is the "Message to students" part.
  • Stay in contact with your students:
Please make sure to always keep in touch with your students and answer to their telephone or Email questions if they have any. Specially, please make sure to explicitly set the time and location for each and every one of your lessons in advance in order to eliviate any confusion. Most of the students can hardly communicate in English or other languages and it is very difficult for them to ask on the telephone or by email.
  • Refrain from abruptly cancelling your class:
There are cases when you cannot continue a lesson with a certain student for personal or work-related reasons. Certainly, if you are leaving Japan, you will not be able to offer classes to your students. In such cases, plaese make sure to fully inform your students in advance about the situation and try to negotiate a good date for ending your language lessons.
  • When you have a full schedule: If you have a full schedule (or you are temporarily leaving Japan) and cannot take students for a while, make sure to reflect that in your teaching profile. Make sure to update your class schedule in your profile when there is a change. Also, If you do not want any more students for a while, make sure to "deactivate" your profile so that it does not show up in the search results.
This is to preserve the reputation of the service as a whole and will in the end be to the benefit of all the teachers. In case of serious complaints from the students against a certain teacher and lack of sufficient explanation from the teacher, Pittari-Sensei preserve the right to terminate the membership of the teacher, in order to preserve the overall quality of the service.
